UNDERSTANDING ABUSERS
Pick a simple word or phrase that your child can use to communicate to you that they’re feeling uncomfortable or unsafe but can’t say it. This can be especially useful at a large family gathering, party, and sleepover in order to talk to you in front of others, or on a phone call and let you know that they need your help.
It could be something like, “I need my teddy.” Whatever works for you and your child.
It’s not easy for anyone to come out and say that something inappropriate is happening while in front of others or to create a scene by wanting to talk to a parent in private. It is our goal to make our kids know that we are aware that they may not always be safe with friends/family and to make it as easy as possible for them to ask for help when they need it.
